The power of the modern game has created the need for better counterattacking shots, which necessitate constant use of the hands. Officer has based this video on the fact that all great players learn to play good defense before becoming more of an offensive threat and the hands are the key to playing good defense. Shots including the heavy loop groundstroke, quick groundstrokes, angles, half volleys, and reflex volleys all involve using your hands for better control. Good hands can be developed with proper practice. "Mental Toughness" has been around as long as there has been competition. In the past 20 years we have relied on the principles of Psychology to help define this most crucial ingredient in championship tennis. Words like self-esteem, positive, negative, and fun have been presented in the hopes of quantifying what it takes mentally to think like a champion. Unfortunately, words of psychology are too vague to define the real battle on the court. The "Warrior Ethos" concept has been around for centuries and does a much better job of explaining the key elements in competition in a way the mind can access. Officer defines the "warrior ethos" and breaks it into 12 categories: Passion, goals, fear, calmness, energy, work ethic, ethics, determination, clarity, belief, competitive fire, and awareness. Learn how to be a "warrior" on the courts!
